Beatles Reviews Get Back: “Aimless, Long, and Curvy” | Music | Entertainment

The footage from the last Beatles recording sessions has been on lockdown for decades, until now. Today Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson released the opening act for Get Back, an eight-hour TV documentary about Disney Plus that gives a real insight into the group’s writing process. While Beatles fans are thrilled to be getting started on the show, reviews haven’t been overwhelmingly positive.

Alexis Petridis of The Guardian described the eight-hour epic as “aimless”.

He says, “Moments of inspiration and interest are stuck in the midst of acres of chatter and rambling repetitions.

“There is a point, about five hours later, when the prospect of hearing another ramshackle version of Don’t Let Me Down becomes an active threat to the viewer’s sanity.”

The Telegraph’s Neil McCormick gave a fairly positive review of the documentary, but added that it is “too long and curvy.”

Neil said: “There can be faces and yawns and worse along the way, and not just from the Fab Four themselves. Because thoroughness is the key word.

However, not all of the criticisms of the three-part documentary are negative.

The Times’ Kevin Maher gave the event four out of five stars while calling it a “deeply moving flashback epic.”

Ed Cumming of The Independent gave the Disney business five out of five stars.

Owen said: “In the end, the finished film transcends both the hype and the anxiety of the fans. Get Back indeed presents The Beatles as a tight-knit group of showman gods who have never stopped doing the clown or to love each other.

The two remaining Beatles themselves, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, have already publicly stated how happy they are with the new show.

Paul said: “I’m really happy that Peter has drawn on our archives to make a series that shows the truth about recording The Beatles together.”

Ringo added: “We spent hours and hours laughing and playing music, not at all like the movie Let It Be that came out. [in 1970]. There was a lot of joy and I think Peter will show it.

Part 1 of The Beatles Get Back is now on Disney Plus. The second part comes out tomorrow, while the third part goes into service on Saturday.
