Rejoice, children of the 90s!
Sixteen years since the last Matrix movie, Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their iconic roles as Neo and Trinity in a fourth installment of the series. Co-creator Lana Wachowski is slated to write, direct, and produce the upcoming sequel.
“We couldn’t be more excited to return to The matrix with Lana, “said Toby Emmerich, President of Warner Bros., in a press release, calling Wachowski” a true visionary – a unique and original creative filmmaker. “
Wachowski started the sci-fi franchise with his sister, Lilly, with the premiere of the first film in 1999. With stunning visual effects (for the time), the films told the story of a disgruntled hacker (Reeves ) who turned out to be a savior destined to free humanity from the virtual reality in which the machines had enslaved them.
The first three films grossed $ 1.6 billion at the global box office.
Wachowski said she was excited to return to the story she first created two decades ago.
“A lot of the ideas that Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” Wachowski said. “I am very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful to have another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
The two sisters wrote the first three films together, but the script for this film will be written by Lana Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.
It is not yet known when the film will be released.
