It’s all of this and more, but one aspect undoubtedly interwoven through the lattice of these elements is the music.

This commitment to avant-garde music has remained steadfast in Resurrections. Released in conjunction with the film, The Matrix Resurrections (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), features not only scores by Golden Globe nominated composers Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer, but also 11 remixes by influential electronic music producers Marcel Dettmann and Thomas Fehlmann, among others. The soundtrack brings to life a unique work that perfectly unites the roots of orchestral and dance music of the iconic franchise.

EDM.com spoke with Klimek and Tykwer to discuss the development process for the soundtrack of Matrix resurrections, and explore why the fusion of classical and electronic music was such an essential part of the film’s storytelling.

Paying homage to the musical history of The matrix

Before even being hired as the film’s composers, Klimek and Tykwer were superfans of the film. Matrix franchise.

Unlike other movie franchises which have iconic songs, the Matrix The franchise, as Tykwer describes it, is unique because of the way its installments push the boundaries of sound experimentation. Klimek pointed out that these “unique sounds” support each film’s score and provide an unparalleled layer of energy.

To achieve their own style of “Matrix sounds “, the composers worked together to build a bank of pre-recorded sounds, which were eventually incorporated into the score of Resurrections. These sounds included the very unique sonic brand elements that Klimek and Tykwer knew to be the key to an unforgettable soundtrack.

At the start of the film’s script development, Klimek and Tykwer had spent over a year recording music with the London Contemporary Orchestra in order to bring samples to the first reading session with the cast and directors. The goal was to give the cast and crew an idea from the start of how the music would complement the acting which Tykwer and Klimek said had a huge impact on the cohesion of Resurrections and his rating.

“Once there is a script, we as composers insist that the musical process begin immediately, even if it takes another year for the funding to be finalized,” says Tykwer. “We believe that music should be a major part of how ideas are conceptualized and executed in the film making process.”

This unique approach helped shape the way music was woven throughout the film. It also gave Klimek and Tykwer the opportunity to receive commentary from director Lana Wachowski, as well as cast and other core cast. This feedback loop has played a central role in achieving a sound that is reminiscent of Matrix classics, but unique enough to stand on their own.

Orchestral scores as a subgenre of EDM

To blend elements of classical music with EDM, Klimek and Tykwer treated the orchestra as a subgenre of the latter, approaching the recording process like that of a DJ. They went ahead and recorded each musician in the orchestra individually to facilitate greater control and flexibility when handling each instrument.

“During the Abbey Road Studio sessions, we recorded everything separately,” Klimek explains. “This included strings, pads and all the underlying themes not only for stringed instruments, but also for wind and brass instruments. closer than ever. “

One of the pillars of the sublime soundtrack was the support of legendary writer and director Lana Wachowski, who has long embraced the role of EDM in The matrix. However, many may not be aware that his background in dance music extends beyond film.

Wachowski is heavily involved in the EDM community, to the point where she sometimes becomes a DJ herself. His deep appreciation for the art of electronic dance music had a major impact on how Klimek and Tykwer approached their working relationship with the legendary director.

Tykwer says that during the film’s composition process, the composers and Wachowski worked almost exclusively with Apple’s Logic X software.
