The cast of Matrix 4 has a new star. Actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who played Black Manta in 2018 Aquaman, is expected to star alongside returning cast Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann-Moss, according to Variety.
Variety sources report that Abdul-Mateen and other actors met director Lana Wachowski over the past week, with Abdul-Mateen becoming the final director’s pick.
Abdul-Mateen also previously starred in Jordan Peele We as main character Adelaide’s father, in Baywatch as a police officer who repels the actions of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and as WD Wheeler in Hugh Jackman’s The greatest showman. Abdul-Mateen also had major or minor roles in Black mirrorthe episode “Striking Vipers”, The Get Down, The Handmaid’s Tale, and in the next one Watchmen HBO series. Abdul-Mateen is also expected to play Candy in Jordan Peele’s 2020 adaptation.
We don’t yet know which character Abdul-Mateen will play, and the sources haven’t told Variety either, but the previous report indicated that Matrix 4 will feature younger versions of Neo and Morpheus.
The film is directed and written by Lana Wachowski. His sister and filmmaker Lilly Wachowski is notably absent from the production of the film. The pair made the original Matrix trilogy, which quickly became a cultural cinematographic benchmark.
